AFIFEST Film Review Writing Competition Winners Announced.
Dana Rondinelli and Lily Munson from I-Poly High School in Pomona and Misha Sallee from Thomas Starr King Middle School in Los Angeles
each received $500 Best Buy Gift Cards in honor of their exemplary work. Vincent Measures who is also at King Middle School was named
a runner up in the competition for his fine work.
These awards are the culmination of a competition in association with AFIFEST, AFI Screen Education, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission
and the LA Film Critics Association. The process began with special screenings of foreign language films for area students, conducted at the
Skirball Cultural Center.
High School students screened AMU and were treated to a Q &A with Director/Screenwriter/ Producer Shonali Bose who pointed out that the
screening was in fact the world premiere of her film. She was extremely happy with the students' response to the work and impressed by their
observations and sophisticated questions.
Middle School students screened ON THE OTHER SIDE, written and directed by Gustavo Loza. This story about three children (a Mexican boy, a
Cuban boy and a Moroccan girl) who share the same loss--the absence of a father who has emigrated searching for a better standard of living.
Approximately 700 middle and high school students from throughout LAUSD, Burbank, Pasadena, Walnut Valley and South El Monte attended
the 5th annual Screen Education program at AFIFEST.
Teachers used AFI Screen Education lesson plans for writing film reviews as part of the outreach. Student-written reviews were judged by
members of the LA Film Critics Association.
